Extending the Standard Model with a Z_N symmetry and a minimal set of new fields offers an elegant and versatile framework to account for the dark matter. In this talk, I will review the theoretical foundations of this approach and explore explicit models that naturally give rise to both WIMP and FIMP dark matter candidates. Emphasis will be placed on the phenomenological implications of these scenarios.
