Alberto Cogliati is a Full Professor of the History of Mathematics at the University of Padua.

His main research interests focus on the history of differential geometry in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Among his recent publications: Breve Storia della Geometria non-euclidea, dall’Antichità a Poincaré, Carocci, 2024.

Abstract:

This presentation offers a concise overview of the life and work of Joseph-Louis Lagrange, one of the most influential mathematicians and physicists of the 18th century. Special attention is given to his scientific correspondence with Leonhard Euler, which played a crucial role in shaping his early ideas and establishing his reputation across Europe. We will also explore his major contributions to analysis, mechanics, and number theory, with a focus on his Théorie des fonctions analytiques.

The Colloquium will be livestreamed at: https://www.youtube.com/live/PHQYXbpLBpY
and will be followed by the offical opening of ICTP's new Euler-Lagrange Lecture Hall.

Refreshments will be served on the terrace of the Leonardo Building after the  Collquium and official opening (if weather permits).
