The Physics Without Frontiers program (PWF) of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in partnership with Salahaddin University - Erbil, holds a summer school on Cosmology and Particle Physics in Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq from 13 to 16th September 2021. The school aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the new ideas and discoveries at the forefront of high energy physics and modern cosmology. Like many other developing countries, Kurdistan Region (or Iraqi Kurdistan) struggles with the lack of expertise and academic professionals. This has a substantial negative impact on the performance of universities in terms of both research and education. Fortunately, ICTP-PWF provides golden opportunities to the developed countries and introduced these majors by sending experts to these regions. As PWF Kurdistan members, we organized the first school in 2019 under the School of High Energy Physics and Cosmology. This school had been a spectacular event for the students and returned very positive feedback. After participating in the first event, several students found their way and decided to choose Particle Physics or Cosmology for postgraduate study. Therefore, holding the second school as a complement of the first one will be very productive and may give a chance to those who want to be a star in the sky of Physics. We feel that this is our duty to bring hope and opportunities for the young physicists in this region.

The school targets the third and fourth-year undergrads in Physics and also Physics graduates who are interested in the subject are welcome to apply. Participants will learn about cosmology and particle physics research from an experimental and theoretical perspective through the courses. Along with the lectures, there will be a live session from CERN, a master class, giving a chance to participants to learn how the data from the ATLAS experiment is analyzed. Furthermore, a session is allocated for introducing how to apply for graduate studies and the carriers available in the field.

This year, we invited many well-known physicists around globe to have a talk and motivate the young students to chase their dreams. Moreover because of the undesired pandemic situation and travel restrictions most of the speakers cannot attend in person, so that we arranged an online platform (zoom) for those outside and the others deliver the lectures in person. The invited physicists are lists below:
  • Sean Carroll, Caltech, Theoretical Physicist
  • Yi-Fu Cai, University of Science and Technology of China, Cosmologist
  • Lavinia Heisenberg, ETH Zurich, Cosmologist
  • Kate Shaw, ICTP and University of Sussex, Particle Physicist
  • Andrea Negri, University of Pavia, Experimental Particle Physicist
  • Adam Abed Abud, CERN and University of Liverpool, Experimental particle Physicist
  • Emmanuel Saridakis, National Observatory of Athens, Cosmologist
  • Hiwa Ahmed, Charmo University, Particle Physicist
  • Muhsin Al-Jaf, University of Garmian, Cosmologist
The organizing committee are:

Project coordinators:
Hiwa Ahmed, (Charmo U. & Central South U., PWF member, Particle Physicist) and Muhsin Al-Jaf, (U. of Garmian & U. of Science and Technology of China, PWF member, Cosmology).
