The ICTP Medical Physics College 2022 is designed to support young medical physicists from developing countries.
The Physics of Medical Imaging is at the heart of contemporary medicine. Medical Imaging equipment is complex and its proper and safe function requires medical physicists trained in imaging procedures and applications. Building capacity in developing countries on this subject is essential for the complete delivery of healthcare in these countries.  For its 30 years of existence, the College on Medical Physics has trained over a thousand medical physicists. Due to the rapid evolution of medical imaging equipment, the need of medical physicists is constantly growing and the College is always oversubscribed. In the future, this demand will further increase as the recent reports of WHO, IAEA and IOMP show that by 2035 there will be a need of almost three times more medical physicists globally.
The College 2022 Directors and lecturers are very experienced and have led similar activities in ICTP, Trieste and other countries. The College will prepare the participants to be able to transfer their knowledge to their colleagues. To allow this the College participants will receive a free compilation of e-learning materials.
Medical Imaging Physics of the following contemporary Technologies, plus related optimisation, safety, effective use and education transfer will be covered:
- X-ray Imaging
- Multi Detector Computed Tomography
- Digital mammography, fluoroscopy and others
- SPECT Tomography
- PET Tomography
- Hybrid Imaging systems
- Digital and other radiation detectors
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging
The College Programme will cover these topics with emphasis on:
- Medical Image parameters
- Optimizing Medical Imaging Procedure
- Evaluation and analysis of Medical Images
- Networks in medical imaging departments
- Medical Imaging Equipment: Management and Specification
- Medical Imaging: Dose Management and Radiation Protection
- Interventional imaging
- Developing Medical Physics Effective Knowledge Structures
- Capacity Building Principles
- Developing online e-learning activities
