Advanced Lectures on Theoretical Physics

Supporting physics teaching and research in Venezuela and Latin America

Physics Without Frontiers has enlisted volunteer Daniel Galviz and partnered with the Physics Department at the University of Los Andes to provide online advanced courses in theoretical physics for undergraduate and graduate students in Venezuela and Latin America.

The first course, Quantum Field Theory, will be taught online from September 2022 to February 2023 by Daniel Galviz at Yau Mathematical Science Center (Tsinghua University) China, and the Bethe Center for Theoretical Physics (University of Bonn) Germany.  Physics students from different universities in Latin America will be trained in quantum field theory and several topics in theoretical physics. Every student at the University of Los Andes (ULA) who approves the course will obtain unit credits in their respective transcript. Other students will receive an ICTP-PWF certificate at the end. Another lecture will be given for the spring term (more details on this in the future).

By the end of the course, there will be a series of guest speakers from BCTP (Uni Bonn), Perimeter Institute, UC Berkeley, LMU Munich, MCQST and Sorbonne University.  They will give a short lecture (2h each) on the applications of QFT to Particle physics (Freddy Cachazo), Astroparticle & Cosmology (Olalla Olea), Condensed Matter (Aya Abouelela), Black Holes (Ruben Campos Delgado), Quantum information & technology (Pooja Malik), Conformal Field Theory (Kasia Budzik), String Theory (Daniel Galviz), Mathematics (Iván Burbano Aldana, Daniel Galviz).

The application procedure is now closed (the deadline expired on 31 August 2022). 26 students were selected from all over Latin America. For more information visit our Website.

Goals and deliverables
Help students in Venezuela and Latin America by teaching lectures on theoretical physics.
Help students to be familiar with advanced research topics in theoretical physics.
Students will solve weekly assignments on these topics.
Top students without MSc./Ph.D. will be mentored to pursue studies abroad, giving advice and recommendations about scholarships at international programs.
