Fernando Quevedo Education: PhD in in Theoretical Physics University of Texas at Austin 1986

Research interests: String theory, phenomenology and cosmology.

Biography: Quevedo obtained early education in Guatemala. His Ph.D. was obtained under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg. He had research appointments at CERN, Switzerland, McGill University in Canada, Institut de Physique in Neuchatel, Switzerland, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, as well as a brief term as professor of physics at the UNAM (Mexican National Autonomous University), Mexico. He joined the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1998, where he is Professor of Theoretical Physics and Fellow of Gonville and Caius College. Quevedo was awarded the 1998 ICTP Prize in recognition of his important contributions to superstring theory.

Collaborations: Received various honours including Doctorates Honoris Causa from the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala and the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, the Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. He is the founder and coordinator of the International Network of Guatemalan Scientists.
