In certain vanadium oxides, the transition-metal atoms form weakly coupled chains or ladders. We propose a relevant 1D toy model, discuss the interplay between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom in this system, and analyze massive phases and quantum criticalities induced by the local spin-orbit coupling. |
