Exciton-polaritons result from strong dipolar interaction between excitons in a semiconductor material and the electromagnetic field confined in the same volume by a photonic nanostructure. A polariton gas is a model system of a dissipative, ultra-light Bose gas in a solid state environment, which provides an easy and complete experimental access to the system observables. Thus, fascinating phenomena like polariton lasing [1], Bose-Einstein condensation [2] and more recently superfluidity [3] could be demonstrated and studied with a great wealth of details. Recently, owing to advances in the domain of semiconductor nanostructure fabrication, new interesting perspectives have emerged: the experimental realization and study of a new state of Bose gases will soon be possible, like low dimensional Bose gases (1D quasi-condensate [4], Tonks-Girardeau liquids [5]), as well as room temperature quantum degeneracy. In this presentation, the most recent experimental observations on polariton gases will be reviewed, and the future possible experimental realization with polariton condensates will be discussed.
